Women's Volleyball - Week 9
A pair of weekend doubleheaders are set to go
Week 9 bumps, sets and spikes this weekend with four schools in action part of back-to-back matches all on the Island.
Capilano Blues @ VIU Mariners – Friday January 16, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
Easily the match of the week as the top two teams in the Conference meet for the final time in the regular season and could be a gold medal preview. They are the only two teams in the Conference with a winning record as six-points separates them in the standings.
Last weekend the Blues set a new school record for the best start in school history, winning their first 12 matches to open the year. They have the top spot in the standings, a spot the Mariners are trying to reclaim.
This matchup has all the makings of a fun offensive battle. Abi Betker and Nnya Mbaoma lead the Blues with 163 and 162 kills respectively while Annika Kuznik and their middles continue to help contribute and keep the defenders off balanced. Setter Mollie English has run a tight ship and is the reigning Athlete of the Week.
The Mariners are undefeated at home but believe it or not, haven’t played at home since Halloween. They are coming off a split last weekend at Camosun with both matches going the distance. They will now play four straight at home with a bye weekend in between heading into the month of February. Grace Brisebois and Regan Ingram continue to lead their team in kills while Lauren Hoard gives them another option during the match.
Following the match on Friday, these two will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Camosun Chargers – Friday January 16, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
For the second time this season the Chargers and Bearcats meet after the Chargers swept the first meeting in Abbotsford winning a pair in dramatic fashion, both in the fifth set.
They are at home for the second straight weekend and final time this month. They are playing 500 at home which included a split last weekend with the Mariners in town; both matches going the distance. Amazingly in their 12 matches so far this season, eight of them have gone to a decisive fifth set. Erica Bolink continues to lead the offence with a Conference high 186 kills.
It continues to be a tough season for the Bearcats, but they did record a win last weekend with a split against the visiting COTR Avalanche with both matches going to a fifth. They are hoping for a turn of fortunes at Camosun, still looking for their first road win this year. Makayla Friesen has been a bright spot for them offensively with 154 kills and 23 service aces.
These two schools will meet for the final time this season on Saturday afternoon in the rematch at 1:00pm.
