What. A. Saturday
All three women's matches went the distance as Week 8 concluded
What a Saturday in women’s volleyball as all three matches went the distance and finished in exciting fashion with each of the home teams earning a win.
Capilano Blues 3
Douglas Royals 2
The Blues women’s team set a new school record by starting a season with 12 consecutive wins, but it wasn’t easy on Saturday.
In the first set the points went back and forth before the Royals took advantage, winning 25-22 giving them momentum after getting swept the night before. That said that momentum didn’t last long as the Blues earned a pair of 25-19 victories in the next two sets to take command of the match.
Instead of folding, the Royals showed great heart and battled in the fourth set to a well-deserved 25-20 win, forcing a deciding set in the fifth. In that last frame, the Blues proved they are just too strong and captured a 15-10 victory to set the new school record.
Next weekend the Blues (12-0) face another tough test visiting the VIU Mariners (9-3) and the Royals (3-9) will enjoy a bye week.
Camosun Chargers 3
VIU Mariners 2
After falling in five on Friday, the Chargers came back to win a fifth set of their own on Saturday to earn a weekend split with their island rivals.
After the Mariners took the first set 25-22, the Chargers came storming back in the second to tie the match with a 25-18 victory. Then they took the third set by the same score to take advantage in the match, but the Mariners wouldn’t go away quietly. They turned the tables in the fourth set to win it by the same score of 25-18 to force a decisive set. In the fifth, the teams went back and forth and needed extra points to decide this one. The Chargers would get the victory thanks to a fifth set 19-17 win for their fifth win of the season.
Next weekend the Chargers (5-7) will welcome the CBC Bearcats (2-10) and the Mariners (9-3) will host the Capilano Blues (12-0) in a first-place showdown.
CBC Bearcats 3
COTR Avalanche 2
Like the Chargers the CBC Bearcats bounced back on Saturday after falling in five sets the night before to capture a fifth set victory of their own on their home floor.
The Bearcats jumped out to a match lead, winning the first set 25-15, however the momentum didn’t last long. The Avalanche came right back to tie the match with a second set victory of 25-22. The momentum shifted again in the third set as the Bearcats used extra points to take the lead again winning 27-25.
The Avalanche wouldn’t go away quietly and tied the match yet again winning the fourth set 25-18 to force a fifth set between these two schools for the second straight day. In the fifth, both teams were running on fumes, but it would be the Bearcats to find an extra gear and win the match with a 15-10 victory in the final frame and earn the split.
Next week the Bearcats (2-10) will visit the Camosun Chargers (5-7) and the Avalanche (5-7) will rest during their bye week.
