Friday Night Women's Volleyball
The Blues, Mariners and Avalanche each win
Friday night, women’s volleyball resumed the regular season following the long semester break to open Week 8.
Capilano Blues 3
Douglas Royals 0
The Blues tied a school record from 2004-2005 with their 11th straight win to open a season making quick work of the visiting Royals. The Blues took the first set 25-17, then took command with a second set win of 25-18. The Royals made the third set close, but in the end, it was the Blues completing the sweep winning 25-23.
These two will meet for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at 5:00pm to close Week 8.
VIU Mariners 3
Camosun Chargers 2
An exciting island rivalry match as the Mariners needed to storm back to win their second half opener.
It would be the Chargers that would take control of the match early with a thrilling 26-24 win showing off their retro jerseys. The momentum wouldn’t last long as the Mariners came right back to win 25-17 to even the match. In the third, the Chargers didn’t seem phased and again took advantage in the match winning 25-21. The fourth set was the Mariners’ turn to show resiliency bouncing back to even the match yet again with a convincing 25-13 win. They carried that momentum into the fifth and decisive set and didn’t let the Chargers get into rhythm, taking them down and winning easily 15-5 to claim the match.
The rematch is set for 1:00pm on Saturday at Camosun.
COTR Avalanche 3
CBC Bearcats 2
This was a fun one to watch! The visiting Avalanche took the first two sets 25-13 and needed extra points to win the second by a 26-24 score. With a two-set advantage they looked comfortable and must have taken their foot off the gas and the Bearcats took over. They cut the lead into half with a third set win of 25-16, before evening the match with a thrilling 27-25 fourth set win to force a “winner take all” fifth. That final set was great but in the end the Avalanche hit a higher level and captured the set and that match 15-9.
The rematch is set for Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm.
