Men's Volleyball Wraps Up
The Avalanche, Mariners and Chargers win on Valentine's Day
The men’s volleyball regular season concluded on Saturday and the PACWEST playoffs are set!
COTR Avalanche 3
Capilano Blues 2
The top seeded Avalanche won 17 matches this season, two more than last year when they finished #1. They took down the Blues on Saturday, a team they will meet again in the semifinals in two weeks.
It was the Blues who drew first blood on Valentine’s Day with a 25-21 victory in the opening set. That momentum didn’t last long with the Avalanche coming right back to win 25-23 to even the match.
The Blues gave the visiting Avalanche all they could handle with a solid third set 25-18 win to retake control of the match. With their backs against the wall, the Avalanche again came back in the next set, winning the fourth 25-17 to force a fifth and deciding set.
In that fifth, the teams again showed how even they can play until the Avalanche pulled ahead for good winning 15-12 for their second straight five-set victory over the Blues.
During the match, superstar Diego Policarpo became the PACWEST’s new kills leader with his 1308 to break the all-time record.
In two weeks the #1 Avalanche (17-3) will meet the #4 Blues (9-11) again, but this time the stakes are much higher as they meet in a Conference semi-final with the winner advancing to the gold medal match.
VIU Mariners 3
CBC Bearcats 0
Like they did on Friday, the Mariners didn’t show the visiting Bearcats much love on Saturday with their second consecutive three-set sweep, this time on Valentine’s Day.
The Conference’s #2 seed Mariners collected set wins of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-22 to conclude the regular season
In two weeks the #2 Mariners (12-8) meet the #3 Douglas Royals (10-10) in a semifinal at the PACWEST volleyball championship tournament with the winner advancing to the gold medal match.
Saturday afternoon the Bearcats (3-17) finish their season and will begin prepare to comeback stronger in 2026-2027.
Camosun Chargers 3
Douglas Royals 1
Despite the win the Chargers were eliminated from postseason play on Saturday and will begin their preparation for next season.
The Royals opened the match with a 25-18 victory and looked like they were off to the races, however the Chargers (9-11) had other ideas. In the second they showed a dominating performance, taking down the home side 25-14 giving them momentum.
They continued their winning ways over the course of the next two sets winning 25-22 and 25-18 to collect the road win. The victory was their ninth of the season but still fell short and will miss out on the PACWEST championship tournament.
Following the loss on Saturday, the Royals (10-10) did some scoreboard watching and when the Avalanche beat the Blues that night, they would clinch the third seed and will meet the #2 VIU Mariners in a semifinal in two weeks’ time.
