A pair of outstanding performances in Week 14
The PACWEST basketball regular season concluded this past weekend, and the playoff brackets are finally set. There were some outstanding individual performances during Week 14, two of the best are named the Athletes of the Week.
Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Trista Thorn – VIU Mariners
In an epic season-ending matchup between the top two seeds in the PACWEST, Mariners guard Trista Thorn led VIU’s offensive attack in two hard-fought victories over Douglas College. On Friday, she made an early statement by scoring seven points in the opening quarter and tied teammate Kaia Simpson with a game-high 13 points on 57% shooting. Trista added four rebounds, a steal, and a block. In the rematch, she took her game to a higher level and got her team’s momentum rolling again with another six first quarter points and scored a game-high 25 points in 25 minutes on 60% shooting. She pulled down another seven rebounds—good for second on the team—and added two assists, two blocks, and a steal.
Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week
Cormick Brown – Camosun Chargers
What a weekend for fifth year Cormick Brown! On Friday night’s Senior Recognition Night, he had the best game of his career in front of a packed house of family and friends. He put up 29 points, including eight-three pointers and shot over 50%. In the process, he surpassed the 1000-point mark (1,018), putting him in an elite category at Camosun. On Saturday, he helped the Chargers game with five steals and added 13 points, with three buckets more coming from downtown. He was instrumental to help the team secure the top spot in the PACWEST for the first time in school history.
