A Bronze Medal Rematch
The Douglas Royals and Capilano Blues meet in a semifinal on Friday
#2 Douglas Royals vs. #3 Capilano Blues – Friday March 6, 5:30pm | WATCH HERE
The Royals and Blues meet in a PACWEST semi-final on Friday afternoon with a berth in the CCAA national championship on the line.
This is an intriguing matchup after they split their seasonal series this year including their last meeting a month ago. Looking at the series, this could go one of two ways, a lopsided Blues win or a Royals tight victory. The Blues won both their games by 21 points, and the Royals’ victories were by one and six points respectively.
On Thursday the Blues advanced to the semis with a 63-41 win over the sixth seeded Camosun Chargers. It wasn’t an offensively gifted game as the Blues shot 25% in the win. Sheleese Hoilett came off the bench to lead her team with 17 points and Mia Parkin had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Their offence will need to be much better on Friday against the Royals and the defence will need to create turnovers after forcing 22 on Thursday.
After finishing as the second seed the Royals received the bye and an extra day’s rest before their playoff tilt with the Blues. They stumbled coming into the postseason winning just once in their last four games…that lone win was a one-point victory at Capilano. During the regular season they shot 36% from the field and scored 67 points a game led by a pair of All-Stars in Mackenzie Dalphond and Lauren Clements. That said, they are a veteran group with several players who know what it takes to win playoff games including Laini Glover, Avnoor Waraich and Amar Thiara.
This game is a rematch of last year’s bronze medal game in which the Blues won 61-45 at Capilano.
The winner advances to the gold medal game on Saturday and earns a berth into the CCAA national championship tournament in Quebec in a couple of weeks as the PACWEST receives two spots on the dance floor.
