Bearcats Meet Coyotes

On this leap day the PACWEST basketball championship opens with the women’s bracket as the host Coyotes welcome the third seeded Bearcats.

For the first time in school history the Bearcats are the higher seed so are considered the home team when they meet the sixth seeded Coyotes despite this quarterfinal on the Coyotes home floor in Kelowna.

They met four times during the regular season with the Bearcats winning three of them including a weekend sweep in their last visit at CBC in mid-January.  Their average margin of victory was 13.6 points in those three wins with the only Coyotes victory coming in their first meeting by just a single point on a buzz beater shot.

Coming into the playoffs the Bearcats won two straight before their bye week so should be very well rested and prepared for their first postseason appearance since 2018.  They are averaging 69.9 points a game and shooting 38% from the field and over 31% from behind the three-point line.

Meanwhile the Coyotes have been playing better as of late, winning four of their eight games of the season in the month of February and have been victorious in two of their last three.  Overall, they shot 33.8% from the field and 26.3% from downtown during the regular campaign and have averaged just over 66 points a game but coughed up a Conference high 72.9 points a game.

This is a must win for both teams.  The winner moves on the semi-final on Friday to face the second seeded Capilano Blues and the loser will be eliminated.

They have not faced each other in the postseason.
