WBB Quarterfinal Preview: Kermodes vs. Falcons
This will be the first Provincial match-up between these two schools.
#4 Quest Kermodes (11-10) vs. #5 Langara Falcons (8-13)
Thursday March 3 - 1:00pm
This will be the first Provincial match-up between these two schools. They played three times during the regular season with the Kermodes winning two of them.
The Kermodes enter the Provincials as the two-time defending champs, while the Falcons make their first appearance since 2011. They haven’t won a playoff game since winning the bronze medal in 2009.
Over the course of the regular season series the Kermodes outscored the Falcons 170-160 and shot just 30% from the field compared to the 29% of the Falcons.
The PACWEST’s Rookie of the Year Jordin Wilkinson led the Kermodes offence scoring 16 points a game, while First Team All-Star Miriam Baumann chipped in with 15 points. That said, Baumann was frustrated by the Falcons defence in game two of the series, dropping in a season low seven points. A performance the Falcons would like to repeat on Thursday.
The Falcons “D” also forced 77 Kermodes’ turnovers.
On the offensive side of things the Falcons were led by Jilliane Vina, scoring 10 points a game. This is where the Falcons struggled this season. They didn’t have a single player average over nine points a game and scored the second fewest in the PACWEST, averaging just 56 points a game. They averaged 53 against the Kermodes.
If the Falcons win, it’ll be due to their defence.
The Kermodes are hoping to win their third straight Provincial title while the Falcons are vying for their 16th since 1971.
The Kermodes-Falcons quarterfinal will open the 2016 Provincial Championship on Thursday at 1:00pm. The winner will face the top ranked VIU Mariners on Friday night in the semi-final.
