The Blues, Mariners and Royals each win on their home floor to close the regular season
The 2025-2026 women’s volleyball regular season concluded on Saturday, and the playoff bracket is set.
Douglas Royals 3
Camosun Chargers 2
On the final day of the regular season the Royals clinched a berth in the championship tournament with a thrilling five-set victory over the visiting Chargers with the teams finishing the season with identical records.
The Chargers grabbed the lead after a 25-18 first set win picking up where they left off on Friday night when they earned a straight set victory. However, Saturday afternoon did not yield the same result.
In the second set, the Royals bounced back with a 25-18 victory of their own and kept that momentum in the third set which they won 25-19 to take control of the match.
With a Chargers’ win, they would capture the third seed, so in the fourth set they battled back to steal the momentum and even the match with a convincing 25-14 win to force a decisive fifth set. Perhaps what they didn’t realize is that the Royals have had plenty of experience in a fifth set scenario this season, playing in their 10th so there was no sense of concern for the home side.
In the decisive set, the Royals came out flying and didn’t give the Chargers a chance to make a run. The Royals captured the set and the match with a 15-5 win and clinched a playoff berth.
In two weeks, the Royals (7-13), as the fourth seed will face the #1 Capilano Blues (19-1) in a semifinal and the #3 Chargers (7-13) take on the #2 VIU Mariners (16-4). The winners will play for PACWEST gold.
VIU Mariners 3
CBC Bearcats 0
Second verse, same as the first as the Mariners crushed the Bearcats on Saturday in a three-set sweep like they did on Friday night.
On Saturday afternoon the Mariners set the tone early with an impressive 25-10 win to take the lead in the match. In the second they kept their foot on the gas and earned a 25-17 victory and were in complete control. They didn’t allow the Bearcats any easy points and finished them off with another 25-17 win in the third set to complete the sweep.
With the win the Mariners finish as the second seed (16-4) and will meet the #3 Camosun Chargers (7-13) in two weeks in a women’s semi-final at the PACWEST championship. Following the loss, the Bearcats (5-15) conclude their season and will begin a new era next fall under a new head coach as Rebecca Weibe has decided to step down.
Capilano Blues 3
COTR Avalanche 0
The Blues made quick work of the Avalanche on Saturday night with a three-set sweep to close out the regular season. The Blues are the regular season champions for the first time since the 1985-86 season when they won under head coach Joe Iacibellis.
In the opening set they crushed the Avs 25-13 to take the momentum they never relinquished. In the second they took complete control, winning 25-21, then finished off the visitors 25-19 for their 19th win of the season.
As the #1 seed, they will meet the #4 seeded Douglas Royals in two weeks in a semi-final.
With the loss, the Avalanche (6-14) fall out of playoff contention and have their season come to an abrupt end.
