Saturday Soccer Recap
The Mariners win big and the Falcons and Royals finish in a tie
VIU Mariners 5 – Capilano Blues 0
Saturday afternoon the Mariners scored three first half goals and cruised to another lopsided win over the Blues. They have now outscored the Blues 10-2 in the first two meetings of the season.
Mary Huggill opened the flood gates in the second minute with her second of the campaign. With the Blues not able to clear the ball, Huggill flew in from midfield, stealing a loose ball away from a Blues defender, then with a little chip pass to herself tallied the marker with a left-footed shot just inside the box. It was a goal that would prove to be the game winner.
Six minutes later the Mariners added another when Brianna Narduzzi, with a defender on her, tapped in a beautiful crossing pass from Jade Dillabough for the goal. She would add her second of the contest in the 37th minute to put the game out of reach when an initial shot pinballed off a couple of different players before bouncing off her left foot into the back of the net.
The Mariners added two more goals in the second half. Emma Thornton scored in the 61st minute following a stunning long pass from the backline, she beat the Blues defence, sprinting in all alone showing outstanding speed and chipped a shot past the challenging keeper. Then in the 83rd minute Maggie Thurbide struck for the home side again following an ill-advised pass by the Blues keeper. The pass was intercepted by Thurbide in the crease which she promptly put into the back of the net.
Keeper Kaiden Thorpe wasn’t very busy, making two saves in the clean sheet.
Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm the Mariners (5-0) host the Blues (0-5) again in the rematch. WATCH HERE
Langara Falcons 1 – Douglas Royals 1
Just one minute into the game, the Falcons got on the board in their gorgeous orange socks. After a player was knocked down just outside the box, Tess Vande Vegte took the free kick and delivered a thing of beauty. Despite a Royals wall off three, Vande Vegte bent her shot around the wall, and over top of a leaping keeper to score the game’s opening goal. It was one of the prettiest goals on the young PACWEST season.
The Falcons carried that goal into break despite some chances on both ends of the pitch.
In the 57th minute, the Royals finally found the equalizer. The reigning PACWEST Athlete of the Week, Isabelle Dobbin scored her fifth of the season. Off a beautiful through ball, Dobbin stayed on side and got behind the Falcons’ backline, all alone in the box and one-on-one with the keeper before picking the top right corner to tie the game.
Both teams had their chances to take the lead with time ticking away but couldn’t find that timely goal and finished in the 1-1 tie.
Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm these two will meet again but this time on the Royals home pitch in Coquitlam. WATCH HERE
