Regular Season Concludes
The Mariners, Falcons and Chargers grab a Saturday win
The women’s basketball regular season wrapped up on Saturday as Week 14 concluded.
VIU Mariners 71
Douglas Royals 59
This was a three-point game heading into the final frame before the Mariners exploded for 17 points in the quarter en route to their 21st win of the season.
They shot 37% on the offensive side with Trista Thorn holding the hot hand off the bench and finishing with 25 points on 60% shooting. Nine different players hit the scoresheet giving the Royals plenty to think about when defending.
Mackenzie Dalphond was the best Royal on the floor with 14 points and 11 rebounds, the only player in double digits.
Both the Mariners (21-3) and Royals (17-7) finish the regular season and earn a bye into the playoffs. The Mariners are the #1 seed while the Royals are #2 and will wait for the semifinal round of the PACWEST championship tournament.
Camosun Chargers 51
CBC Bearcats 43
It was a game that meant nothing in the standings as the Chargers and Bearcats concluded the regular season, both teams shooting a miserable 29%.
On the Chargers side Brooklyn Walbaum dropped in 16 points on the strength of four-three pointers while Jayci Chase added 14 points and Dani Mellon snagged 10 rebounds in the win. The victory snaps their seven-game losing skid and gives them some confidence going into the playoffs.
It wasn’t a great offensive game for the Bearcats with only Julie Dueck hitting double-digits with 12 points.
The Bearcats (13-11) finish as the fourth seed and will meet the Langara Falcons in a quarterfinal when the PACWEST championship opens on March 5th. The Chargers (7-17) are the sixth seed and will face the Capilano Blues in the quarters on their home floor at PISE.
Langara Falcons 58
Capilano Blues 56
What a weekend for the Falcons, earning a home-and-home sweep heading into the playoffs after an impressive road win at Capilano on Saturday night to end the regular season.
Down by three points heading into the fourth quarter the Falcons outscored the Blues 16-11 to capture their 11th win of the season and will ride that high and confidence into the playoffs. Overall, they shot 34% from the field as Nadia Singh and Sydney Chiasson each scored 12 points to pace their club and Reegan Bond finished with 12 rebounds. The Falcons (11-13) win their final four games of the regular season and will finish as the fifth seed in the standings and will face the CBC Bearcats in a quarterfinal in a couple of weeks.
For the second straight night the Blues’ shooters were held in check for most of the game shooting 29%. Maddy Coffin was outstanding with a game high 22 points and 12 rebounds but was the only real threat for their offence. Barcha Hnizdilova scored only six points but did grab 10 boards in the setback. It’s been a tough stretch for the Blues (15-9) to end the season with four losses in their last five games. They will finish as the third seed and will meet the Camosun Chargers in a quarter-final when the championship tournament opens in a couple of weeks.
