Regular Season Finales
The women's PACWEST basketball schedule concludes this weekend
The PACWEST women’s basketball schedule will conclude this weekend with three important doubleheaders with playoff positioning on the line including first place.
Douglas Royals @ VIU Mariners – Friday February 20, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
With a single win this weekend the Mariners will clinch first place and be the #1 seed heading into the PACWEST championship tournament during the first week of March.
The Mariners (19-3) currently have a four-point advantage in the standings but as it stands the seasonal series between these two teams is tied. The only way for the Royals to clinch first is to sweep the Mariners this weekend.
Coming into the regular season finale the Mariners are playing their best basketball of the year, winning seven straight games and are undefeated on their home floor. Overall, this season they are getting it done on both sides of the floor, scoring almost 65 points a game while holding teams to 53 a game. They are shooting 34% from the field and forcing 18.5 turnovers on the defensive side. They smoked the Royals in their first meeting this season by 22 points before the Royals came back the next day with a 14-point win.
Speaking of the Royals (17-5), they will be well prepared for this first place showdown after having a bye last weekend. They have won eight of their last nine games and are leading the PACWEST averaging 68.2 points a game and shooting 37%. Like the Mariners, their defence has been outstanding limiting the opposition to 54 points each contest and are forcing 22.6 turnovers a game.
This has all the makings of a classic weekend between two of the best programs in the entire CCAA. The rematch and final game of the regular season is set for Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
Capilano Blues @ Langara Falcons – Friday February 20, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is the first of a home-and-home between these two schools to wrap up the regular season.
The Blues (15-7) still have an outside chance of clinching the second seed and a first-round bye in the playoff tournament if they can sweep the Falcons and get some help. They currently own the tiebreaker against the second seeded Douglas Royals but are four points behind them. If the Blues can sweep and the Royals lose both at VIU, the Blues will clinch the second seed. They have stumbled as of late losing two of their last three games including a split last weekend at CBC. In the seasonal series with the Falcons, the Blues have won both games by 16 and seven points respectively.
Regardless of what happens this weekend the Falcons (9-13) will finish as the fifth seed and will meet the CBC Bearcats in a quarterfinal in March at the PACWEST championship tournament. They have won three of their last four games including a sweep at Okanagan last weekend. They are scoring over 61 points a game and shooting 36% on the offensive side. This is a great opportunity for the Falcons to solidify a couple of different things prior to the playoffs against a very good team.
The rematch is set for Saturday night at 5:00pm as the scene shifts to Capilano for the final game of the regular season.
CBC Bearcats @ Camosun Chargers – Friday February 20, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
A pair of playoff schools will battle this weekend as the Chargers and Bearcats meet with the knowledge of where they will finish in the standings this season.
The Bearcats (12-10) have won two of their last three and will finish as the fourth seed and will meet the Langara Falcons in a PACWEST playoff quarterfinal. Coming into the weekend they are 12 points ahead of the Chargers in the standings and swept them at the beginning of November by 13 and five points respectively.
The sixth seeded Chargers (6-16) have lost six in a row coming into the weekend knowing they will face the third seed in a PACWEST playoff quarterfinal on their home floor in a couple of weeks. They haven’t won since January 17th and would like nothing more than to enter the postseason on a high after a successful weekend against the Bearcats.
The rematch and final game between these two schools this season is set for Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
