Saturday Sweeps
The Royals, Mariners and Bearcats sweep the weekend
The women’s PACWEST basketball schedule wrapped up on Saturday afternoon with similar results to the games on Friday night.
Douglas Royals 54
Camosun Chargers 35
For the second straight day the Royals and Chargers played a defensively minded game, giving the offences issues trying to score.
The Royals shot 28% from the field and held the Chargers to just 18% with both teams clearly struggling. Lauren Clements led all scorers with 14 points, 10 of which came from the free-throw line and Mackenzie Dalphond popped off the bench to add 13.
While their offence wasn’t great, their defence kept the Chargers to just 35 points and single digits in the final three quarters. They also forced 29 turnovers and made 19 steals, nine of those steals came from the hard defensive work of Clements.
With the win, the Royals (16-4) hold onto first place and will visit the Capilano Blues (13-5) next weekend and the Chargers (6-14) will use a bye week to try and find their offence before the final push to the end of the season.
VIU Mariners 63
Capilano Blues 61
Mackenzie Cox knocked down two-free throws with 1:29 remaining in the ballgame which proved to be the difference as the Mariners earned a seasonal series sweep, beating the Blues at Capilano.
As a team the Mariners shot 32% and Trista Thorn was the lone player in double digits, dropping in 12. Cox scored seven points in total, five of which came from the free-throw line.
Defensively they held the Blues to 33% shooting and didn’t allow a bucket after Cox hit the game winning free-throws with 89 seconds left. Barcha Hnizilova was the best player on the floor dropping 18 and grabbing 11 rebounds in a losing effort.
The weekend sweep gives the Mariners a four-point cushion in the standings for second place and keeps them two-points back of the front running Douglas Royals. Next weekend the Mariners (15-3) will host the Okanagan Coyotes (0-20) and the Blues (13-5) welcome the Royals (16-4).
CBC Bearcats 74
Okanagan Coyotes 67
The Bearcats scored a much-needed sweep over the visiting Coyotes on Saturday to push themselves two games above the 500 mark and sole possession of fourth place.
On the offensive side they shot 38% and had nine different players hit the scoresheet led by Julie Dueck’s 21 points. AJ Sobotta and Jayla Huynh each hit three-three pointers to add to deep threat, and they did just enough defensively to secure the win and weekend sweep.
The Coyotes feel like this one slipped away after two big performances from Jordan Kemper and Antonella Luraghi. Both players nailed four-three pointers, but they didn’t get any help from the rest of the roster. They combined to score 45 of their 67 points, led by Kemper’s game high 23 and 12 rebounds.
Thursday night the Bearcats (10-8) tip off Week 12 early when they visit the Langara Falcons (6-12) and the Coyotes (0-20) head to the island to meet the VIU Mariners (15-3) on Friday.
