Friday Night Finals
The Royals, Mariners and Bearcats each win in Week 11
Week 11 of the PACWEST women’s basketball season opened with three important games as the calendar is about to turn over to February.
VIU Mariners 57
Capilano Blues 45
The visiting Mariners (14-3) blasted out of the gate with a 24-5 first quarter to set the tone en route to their 14th win of the campaign.
This was a defensive slugfest with no easy buckets. The Mariners shot 28% from the field but held the Blues (13-4) to just 17%. The teams combined for 38 turnovers and never really found a rhythm with just one player each reaching double figures.
Sarah Cook led the Mariers with a game high 15 points while the Blues leading scorer was Alexa Kusel off the bench with 11 on the strength of three-threes.
The two schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm with the offences hoping to find a few more openings.
Douglas Royals 67
Camosun Chargers 46
With a Friday night victory, the Royals maintain their lead in the PACWEST standings with a lopsided win over the visiting Chargers thanks to an incredible fourth quarter.
The Royals defence pitched a fourth quarter shutout and outscored the Chargers 20-0 in the final frame, pulling away in what was a close battle until then. Overall, the Royals shot 38% with Lauren Clements scoring 17 points and Mackenzie Dalphond added 17 off the bench.
Their defence held the Chargers without a point in the final quarter and shot 29% from the field. Jordyn Broekhuizen scored 12 off the bench and Brooklyn Walbaum also finished with 12 points in the setback.
The Royals (15-4) will host the Chargers (6-13) again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm.
CBC Bearcats 60
Okanagan Coyotes 55
The Bearcats defence held the Coyotes to single points in the second and third quarters and did just enough offensively to score their ninth win of the campaign.
Their offence shot 34% from the field with Kagari Tomita scoring 16 points to lead her team and grabbed 11 rebounds. Katelyn Mallette had a massive game on the boards with 20 rebounds and added 13 points in the win.
They held the visiting Coyotes to 27% shooting. Their offence was led by Antonella Luraghi and her 15 points while Rebecca Boyes added 11.
On Saturday afternoon the Bearcats (9-8) and Coyotes (0-19) will meet for the final time at 1:00pm.
