A busy weekend of games with six schools in action
It’s Week 11 and the final weekend of January with schools eyeing the end of the season closing in quickly.
VIU Mariners @ Capilano Blues – Friday January 30, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is the doubleheader of the weekend when the Mariners visit the Blues with both teams jockeying for a first round playoff bye.
They come into the weekend with identical records of 13-3, with 26 points, tied for second place in the standings. The Mariners have won three of their last four games but didn’t shoot the ball well last weekend at Langara, losing the first, then sneaking a three-point victory the following day with only 49 points scored. On the season they are shooting 34% and scoring over 63 a game without a player averaging double figures as Sammy Shields leads her club with 9.9 points a game. Looking at these two teams head-to-head, the Mariners won the first two meetings against the Blues at VIU in mid-November with victories of 10 and 15 points respectively.
Last weekend the Blues finally saw action in the second semester and looked good on the road winning both games at Camosun. During the season they are scoring 67.3 points a game and shooting 37% from the field with Maddy Coffin continuing to lead the Conference with 17.8 a game. She and Barcha Hnizdilova have found their stride and offer a formidable 1-2 punch.
On Saturday afternoon they will meet again for the final time this regular season at 1:00pm.
Camosun Chargers @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 30, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The top seeded Royals (14-4) will look to extend their five-game winning streak this weekend when they host the Chargers (6-12) in their final home weekend of the season. They swept the Chargers at Camosun in mid-November winning both games by eight points.
Coming into the weekend they have a two-point lead in the standings but have played two more games then the Marines and Blues who are chasing them. They have been solid on both side of the floor during this winning streak, outscoring their opponents 78-50. The offensive side this season, the inside-outside play of Lauren Clements and Mackenzie Dalphond has been very good and tough to defend with both players averaging over 13 points a game. It will no doubt be an emotional weekend for graduating seniors Laini Glover and Avnoor Waraich, playing at home for the last time.
The Chargers are on the road for the final time this season, playing out the schedule and the playoffs on their home floor. They are currently tied for fifth place with six wins this season but have only one victory in their last four games. On the season they are shooting 38% and dropping over 64 points a game. They will need to tighten up their defence this weekend against a veteran Royals team that can score from multiple places on the floor.
On Saturday afternoon the Royals and Chargers meet for the final time in the regular season at 1:00pm.
Okanagan Coyotes @ CBC Bearcats – Friday January 30, 6:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Bearcats (8-8) and Coyotes (0-18) meet for the second weekend this season after the ‘Cats went to Kelowna and won a pair of lopsided games by an average of over 25 points.
It has been a while since the Bearcats tasted victory, losing seven straight dating back to the first semester and are coming off their bye week, looking for answers. They are in sole possession of fourth place in the standings, with a four=point cushion but need to get back in the win column for the confidence of the team. They are averaging the second fewest points in the Conference and are shooting 33%.
The Coyotes are in a must win situation and know one loss this weekend will officially eliminate them from postseason play for the second straight year. They are winless averaging 55-points a game and shooting 34% from the field.
The schools will meet again on Saturday afternoon for the final time at 1:00pm in the rematch.
