Avs Go For Gold
The COTR Avalanche will play for national gold after a sweep in their semi
For the first time in school history, the COTR Avalanche will play for CCAA gold following a three-set sweep over the Quebec champion Titans de Limoilou on Thursday night in Edmonton in a semifinal.
The PACWEST champs opened the match with a 25-19 victory to set the tone and carried that momentum into the second winning 25-20 to put themselves in the driver’s seat.
Then in the third the Titans tried to push back but for every run they made, the Avalanche had an answer and would not be denied their place in the CCAA finale with a 26-24 third set win. The victory punches their ticket to a gold medal appearance for the first time in school history and they will meet the defending national champion, the Red Deer Kings who are making their 18th championship appearance.
On Thursday the dynamic duo of Dylan Annala and Diego Policarpo paved the way and combined for 29 kills in the three sets. Luke Margenau was named the Player of the Match with production out of the middle with nine kills and a block. Defensively the Avalanche slowed the Titans offence and kept their big swingers at bay for the majority of the win as they finished without a player in double digit kills.
In the final on Saturday night, they will meet the Kings who, like the Avalanche, haven’t dropped a set this entire tournament sweeping the Humber Hawks and VIU Mariners into the gold medal match. The title match is set for 7:00pm MST on Saturday.
