Men's Friday Night Finals

Men’s volleyball played their final Friday night matches of the season with the playoff picture starting to come into focus.

This was a heck of a match and a potential semi-final preview, so both teams wanted to flex their muscles.

The Avalanche opened the match with back-to-back wins of 27-25 and 25-23 and looked like they were in the driver’s seat but hang on.

 In the third set the Blues came alive, first cutting the Avs lead in half with a 25-23 win, then tied the match winning 25-21 to force the fifth set.

In the final frame both schools went head-to-head before the Avalanche found an extra gear and prevailed with a 15-11 win.

These two schools will play in a rematch on Saturday night at 6:00pm when the Avalanche (16-3) face the Blues (9-10) to close out the regular season schedule.

Camosun Chargers 2

The Royals take control of a playoff spot with a thrilling five setter on Friday night.

Both teams showed how evenly matched they are.  The Royals opened the match with a 25-15 win before the Chargers bounced back with a 25-20 victory.

In the third, the Royals retook the lead with a 25-19 win, but the Chargers didn’t go away.  They forced a fifth set after winning the fourth by the score of 25-21.

Finally in the fifth set, the Royals and their hometown faithful mustarded up just enough to beat the Chargers 15-11 to claim their 10^th win of the campaign.

Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm the Royals (10-9) welcome the Chargers (8-11) with a victory eliminating the Chargers from the postseason.

VIU Mariners 3
CBC Bearcats 0

The Mariners made quick work of the visiting Bearcats with a three-set sweep for their 11^th win of the season which also allows them to clinch second place in the standings.

They took momentum early and never let it go winning, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21.

On Saturday afternoon the Mariners (11-8) host the Bearcats (3-16) for the last time this year.  It’s also the Bearcats final match of the year.
