It’s the final weekend of the men’s PACWEST volleyball schedule with plenty still on the line as four schools battle for the final three playoff spots.
Camosun Chargers @ Douglas Royals – Friday February 13, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
What a finish this will be! This weekend will have that playoff feeling as the Royals and Chargers battle for one of the three playoff spots with two points separating them in the standings.
The Royals have the slight advantage, ahead of the Chargers by two-points but the Chargers have the tiebreaker card after hosting and beating the Royals twice at the beginning of the year in five and four sets respectively.
Coming into the weekend the Royals (9-9) swept the CBC Bearcats last weekend and will be at home where they have played to a 6-2 record. They are still the PACWEST defending champs and will be hard to beat on their home floor. Marvin Tumusiime continues to lead their offensive push with 225 kills this year and Nick Robles and Jakub Antosik adding some secondary scoring.
The Charges (8-10) are the school on the outside looking in entering Week 13 of the regular season. They have stumbled coming into the final weekend, winning just once in their last three. As mentioned, they do control the tiebreaker with the Royals which could come into play at the end of the weekend. If they can win both, they will clinch a postseason berth. Eli Woldringh has a team high 192 kills.
They will meet on Saturday afternoon in the rematch at 3:00pm in another uber important battle.
COTR Avalanche @ Capilano Blues – Friday February 13, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
As Week 13 begins on Friday night, the only team to have clinched a playoff spot to date is the COTR Avalanche (15-3) who are the #1 seed. They hit the road to wrap up the regular season and visit the Capilano Blues, a team still fighting for their playoff lives. The outcome this weekend doesn’t affect the standings as far as the Avalanche are concerned and will no doubt work on a couple of minor adjustments to prepare for the playoffs. They have won three of their last four matches.
This weekend means a lot more to the hometown Blues (9-9), currently tied for third place in the standings. They have been such a solid home team this season with a 7-1 record coming into the weekend and are hoping that success continues. They have won two of their last three, both on the road to put themselves in the thick of the playoff race. The Blues will need somehow find a way to beat the Avalanche, who swept them at COTR at the end of November in five and three sets respectively.
On Saturday night, this potential playoff preview plays their second match of the doubleheader at 6:00pm to close out the weekend.
CBC Bearcats @ VIU Mariners – Friday February 13, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
These two schools split their opening weekend in mid-October, the Mariners earning a three-set sweep before the Bearcats won in five the next day.
The Mariners (10-8) have the advantage of all the schools still fighting for a playoff spot with a two-point lead and in second place. A win on Friday would put them into the postseason. They come into the weekend winning five of their last six matches and have been one of the best in the second half of the season. They have also been a very successful team at home, winning six of their eight so far this year. Carter Munro leads them offensively with 161 kills.
The Bearcats (3-15) are looking to play spoiler having already been eliminated from the playoffs. They are also trying to do something they have yet to do this season, win on the road. Last weekend they lost both matches at Douglas and have just one win in their last four. That said, Liam Sampson and Brandon Sekhon have each had a great offensive season with 222 and 216 kills between the two of them.
On Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm, the Mariners and Bearcats will meet for the final time this season.
