Home Teams Rule Saturday
The Avalanche, Chargers and Royals win in Week 12
The home teams would run the table on Saturday in men’s volleyball to close out Week 12 of the regular season.
COTR Avalanche 3
VIU Mariners 1
The top seeded Avalanche earned a weekend split with a four-set victory on Saturday in their final home match of the year.
They opened up play with a convincing 25-15 victory to take control of the match. Despite the lopsided loss, the Mariners showed great character coming back in the second set with a 25-17 win to even things up.
The Avalanche, however, would not be denied on the afternoon, taking the third set 25-16, then finished off the visitors 25-22 in the fourth for their 15th win of the year. The match marked the final home appearance for some of the longest serving Avalanche including Diego Policarpo, Ethan Braam and Reese Clark.
Next weekend the Avalanche (15-3) visit the Capilano Blues (9-9) and the Mariners (10-8) welcome the CBC Bearcats (3-15).
Camosun Chargers 3
Capilano Blues 2
This was the most exciting match of the weekend as the Chargers held serve and recorded a thrilling five-set win over the visiting Blues in their final home match of the year.
The Chargers took full command of the match, winning the first two sets 25-23 and 25-21 and were seemingly in the driver’s seat.
Cue the Blues momentum. In the third set the visitors cut the lead in half with a 26-24 victory, then rode that positivity into the fourth set where they tied the match 25-16 to force a fifth set.
In the final frame, knowing a potential playoff berth is on the line, the Chargers found an extra gear to comeback and beat the Blues 15-13 in a barnburner.
The victory keeps the Chargers (8-10) playoff hopes alive with an extremely important match next weekend when they visit the Douglas Royals (9-9) with four points separating them in the standings. The Blues (9-9) are also on the bubble and will try and clinch next weekend when they host the COTR Avalanche (15-3).
Douglas Royals 3
CBC Bearcats 0
In the Saturday night cap, the Royals played well with an impressive three-set sweep over the visiting Bearcats to put themselves into a playoff position. If the playoffs started today, the Royals would be in, but there are still two matches to be played next weekend.
The Royals took down the Bearcats 25-23, 25-18 and 25-13 for their ninth win of the campaign and into a third-place tie in the standings.
Next weekend will be massive when the Royals (9-9) host the Camosun Chargers (8-10) with the winner no doubt clinching a playoff berth. The Bearcats (3-15) will end their season on the road when they visit the VIU Mariners (10-8) in Nanaimo.
