Week 10 Men's Volleyball
A pair of matches will highlight the weekend
Men’s PACWEST volleyball enters Week 10 of the regular season, and a pair of matches will highlight the weekend doubleheader.
COTR Avalanche @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 23, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
It’s another rematch of last season’s gold medal match as the Avalanche travel to Douglas to meet the Royals. They first met in mid-November with the Royals handing the Avalanche their only loss to date, a dramatic fifth-set win, coming back after being down 2-1. The following day the Avalanche swept the Royals to earn the weekend split.
The Avalanche (11-1) are well rested after their bye week and will be ready to go on Friday night. Since that setback to the Royals, they have won five straight and are a perfect 6-0 on the road. They are coming off two-four set wins at CBC prior to the bye. Dylan Annala leads his team with 165 kills and Diego Policarpo has 152 total points.
The Royals (6-6) also enjoyed their bye week last weekend after losing a pair of four-setters at Capilano the weekend before. They have been good at home with a 3-1 record but will be in tough against the visiting Avalanche this weekend. Their block defence will need to be on point and have good solid movement at the net. On the offensive side Marvin Tumusiime has a team high 141 kills and Niko Robbles has chipped in with 97, looking to hit the century mark this weekend.
On Saturday night, these two schools will meet for the final time in the regular season at 7:00pm.
Capilano Blues @ CBC Bearcats – Friday January 23, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Blues and Bearcats meet for the second weekend this season with both schools pushing to solidify a playoff position after missing out last season. In their first weekend doubleheader, the Blues swept the Bearcats in four and three sets respectively.
Coming into the weekend the Blues (7-7) have lost two straight and are back on the road for the second consecutive weekend, still looking for their first road victory of the year. To capture a playoff spot, they will need to find success away from Capilano with four roadies to go. Outside Luke Tiegen has a Conference high 175 kills and is the main focal point of the offence, something the Bearcats defence will try and slow.
Speaking of the Bearcats (2-12) they are on the outside looking in at the playoffs and need to win now with six matches remaining. They are at home for the final time this year, trying to snap their current six match losing streak. Of these six losses, three of them have been straight set sweeps. They are eight points back of the group in the standings, needing to find some success and consistency with the schedule winding down.
These two schools will meet again on Saturday night at 7:00pm.
