Saturday Volleyball Bumps
The Avalanche, Blues and Chargers each claim the DUB
It was another exciting Saturday in PACWEST men’s volleyball as Week 8 drew to a close.
Camosun Chargers 3
VIU Mariners 2
Did someone say reverse sweep? That’s what happened at Camosun on Saturday as the Chargers roared back to win their fifth of the season.
The Mariners looked like they were in the driver’s seat on Saturday hoping to earn a sweep after set wins of 25-17 and 25-22 to open the match, looking for their sixth win of the year, but the Chargers had other ideas. They would battle back with a pair of 25-20 victories to force a deciding set.
In the final frame they kept that momentum and captured a 15-9 victory to complete the reverse sweep and stay in a fourth-place tie with the Mariners.
Next weekend the Chargers (5-7) welcome the CBC Bearcats (2-10) and the Mariners (5-7) entertain the Capilano Blues (7-5).
COTR Avalanche 3
CBC Bearcats 1
For the second day the top ranked team in the nation needed four sets to take care of business on Saturday night cruising past the hometown Bearcats.
The Avalanche drew first blood with a 25-18 victory picking up where they left off the night before. However, the Bearcats battled back in the second and evened the match 25-19 as they looked to push the top team.
In the third set the Avalanche won a tight contest 25-23 as the Bearcats gave them all sorts of issues. Then in the fourth the Avs again had their hands full but were able to capture the match with a 25-21 victory and earned their 11th win of the season.
Next weekend the Avalanche (11-1) will enjoy a bye weekend while the Bearcats (2-10) hit the road and visit the Camosun Chargers (5-7).
Capilano Blues 3
Douglas Royals 1
What a weekend for the hometown Blues collecting a sweep of the defending PACWEST champions.
After a five-set win on Friday night the Blues picked up right where they left off with a first set victory of 26-24 in dramatic fashion on Saturday. Despite the setback the Royals rallied in the second and evened the match with a 25-20 win.
In the third, both schools made some outstanding plays trying to take the advantage. The Blues would find an extra gear and win the third 25-21, carrying the momentum into the fourth when they finished off the Royals 25-23 to complete the weekend sweep and move into sole possession of second place.
Next week the Blues (7-5) visit the VIU Mariners (5-7) in a couple of matches that could have playoff implications. The Royals (6-6) will get back to the drawing board during their bye.
