Charging Towards Bronze
The Camosun Chargers take down the defending champs and go for bronze
The Camosun Chargers will get an opportunity to win their first CCAA medal after a thrilling 66-62 win on Friday night in the bronze medal semifinal, beating the defending champion Humber Hawks.
Offensively it wasn’t the most gifted game as the Chargers shot 29% but they played a great team game with four of their five starters scoring at least 10 points. Down the stretch their defence stepped up and took away easy buckets for the Hawks not allowing them to find anything from the outside. Tyler Synesael was a beast down low scoring four points in the last 30 seconds to give his club some breathing room as he finished with 13 in the ball game and grabbed 11 rebounds.
David Finch was named the Player of the Game with 20 points, snagged eight boards and made four steals. Rookie Thomas Beames played a major role in the victory, dropping 14 points and was 7-9 from the free throw line.
Their defence forced 18 turnovers, collected 14 steals and held the CCAA Player of the Year Malik Grant to just nine points before seriously injuring his ankle with under a minute and a half left in the third quarter.
With the victory, the Chargers advance to their second national bronze medal game in three seasons and will meet the Ontario wildcard team, the Mohawk Mountaineers on Saturday at 3:00pm. The Mountaineers lost to the Hawks in the OCAA championship game 80-67.
