Cardiac Chargers
The Camosun Chargers earn their first nationals win in a tight contest with Keyano
Another day and another cardiac game for the Camosun Chargers who hang on for a 70-67 victory over the ACAC champion Keyano Huskies in the bronze medal quarterfinal on Thursday. This was a bounce back game after falling in double overtime on Wednesday.
Owen Jones hit two free-throws with seven seconds to play, and the Huskies missed a game tying three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Chargers their first win of the championship. The Chargers outscored the Huskies in the bookend quarters including 25-16 in the fourth to earn a comeback win after trailing by six heading into the final frame.
As a team the Chargers shot 45% from the field but left plenty of points at the free-throw line finishing 20-32. Guard Cormick Brown drained a team high 17 points and Tyler Synesael had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. The PACWEST Player of the Year, David Finch had a much better game on Thursday scoring 13 points on 50% shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Jones was great off the bench with those two made free-throws in the dying seconds of the game and collected 11 points including knocking down three-three pointers.
The victory on Thursday moves the Chargers into a spot in the bronze medal semifinal game on Friday night at 7:00pm. They will meet the loser of Thursday night’s semifinal between the VIU Mariners and Humber Hawks.
