Matt McKay Steps Down

Douglas College Athletics & Recreation announced today that Matt McKay will be departing from his role as Head Coach of the Royals Men's Basketball program after five seasons of leadership, mentorship, and commitment to student‑athlete success.

"It's truly been a privilege to spend the last five seasons as head coach of the men's basketball team here at Douglas College," said McKay. "I want to thank the Royals Athletics staff for the opportunity to be a part of this outstanding athletic department, as well as to all the players and coaches that make Douglas College such a special place to work.

Although I won't be on the sideline with the Royals next year, I will still be rooting for the team and doing whatever I can to help the team and department when able. It has been an amazing experience and one that I will always cherish."

McKay joined the Royals in 2021 and quickly established a culture grounded in academic accountability, personal development, and community engagement. During his tenure, the program celebrated significant achievements in the classroom, including nine CCAA National Scholars and six PACWEST Academic Excellence Award recipients.

"On behalf of the entire Royals' family, we would like to thank Coach McKay for his leadership, dedication, commitment, and unwavering support of the men's basketball program," said Brian McLennon, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "I know Matt will continue to contribute to the sport of basketball through his future endeavours with Basketball BC and Canada Basketball."

Douglas College will begin the search for the next head coach of the men's basketball program in the coming weeks.
