PACWEST Golf Tees Off
Six schools open the 2016 golf season at Ledgeview golf course in Abbotsford
The PACWEST golf season opens this weekend as six schools will see action at Ledgeview Golf Course in Abbotsford hosted by the UFV Cascades.
On the women's side, just three schools will field a team; the UBC Okanagan Heat, Cascades and one golfer from the VIU Mariners; Paige Schappert.
One of, if not the favourite on the women's side will be Cascades' third year player Hannah Dirksen. The reigning PACWEST provincial champion will be pushed by her three teammates trying to get back to the CCAA national tournament.
The Cascades will be chased by four Heat golfers, led by West Kelowna's Jessica Kozak. After the graduation of national gold medalist Carolyn Lee, the Heat will be looking to Kozak and Emily Adams to lead them.
On the men's side the reigning national champion Camosun Chargers will be the favourite going into the weekend. Gone is All-Canadian Brady Stead but the Chargers are hoping fifth year athlete Mac Keats and third year players Matt Matheson and Scott Merriam can find their stroke early.
The Cascades have high hopes as Connor O'Dell returns for his fifth and final season and that Halen Davis and Kaleb Fisher can hold off the field. In all the Cascades have seven golfers on the roster and will look to use home course advantage to play well.
The Heat will be led by James Casorso who enters his fourth year after playing well in 2015. Joshua Evans and Grant Dollevoet could have an impact as well, both local players.
The Douglas College Royals and Langara Falcons each have six male golfers on the roster looking to make their mark in 2016. The Royals feature Steven Hayes now in his fourth year and five other golfers in their first or second year.
The veteran on the Falcons roster is Jacob Vanderpas entering in his third year and is surrounded by four rookies and a second year player; Jordan Balogh-Callow.
