The PACWEST women’s soccer champions the VIU Mariners are preparing for the 2019 CCAA National Championship in Edmonton. The Mariners will open play against the wildcard entry from the OCAA the Seneca Sting on Wednesday at 2:00pm PST.
The Sting are no ordinary wildcard team. They finished the regular season at 9-0 and atop the OCAA East standings, then breezed through the playoff bracket outscoring two opponents 6-1 in the process. However in the final they fell 2-0 at the hands of the defending champion Fanshawe Falcons. The Sting are ranked fifth in the country, so a tall task for the Mariners who are right behind them in the standings. Mariners finished with eight wins on the season and finished ranked #5 on the list.
The Mariners of course advanced to the CCAA national championship by beating the Capilano Blues 6-1 in the PACWEST gold medal game.
During the regular season the Sting scored 49 times led by Sona Makulova and her 12 goals. Carly Uddenberg will also need to be attended to after scoring seven times in their nine games played. The Mariners by the way scored 22 times led by Chloe Gummer’s seven goals.
The last time the Mariners won a medal at the CCAA women’s national championship was when they hosted and won gold in 1993 as Malaspina. Meanwhile Seneca has never won national gold; the highest they finished was in 2014 when they won bronze. It is the school’s lone CCAA medal.
Kick-off on Wednesday is scheduled for 2:00pm PST. WATCH HERE
