The PACWEST women’s soccer season opened over the weekend and each game was extremely close.
VIU Mariners 1 - BOX SCORE
Langara Falcons 1
Still upset by their PACWEST semi-final loss last season to the Mariners, the Langara Falcons went into VIU on Saturday and came out swinging.
Within the first minute of play Kayla Schmit scored for the Falcons, silencing the home side.
After the goal both teams settled in and played excellent defence. The Mariners did collect 10 shots in the first half and goalie Sydney Bell had to be sharp.
Mariners’ second year forward Karen Battie took a page from the Falcons book and scored within the first minute of the second half, tying the score at one.
Both teams had their chances in the second half but both goalies slammed the door. Bell made seven saves while Mariners goalie Alex DeMille collected four.
Douglas Royals 1 - BOX SCORE
Quest Kermodes 1
In the driving rain the Royals and Kermodes didn’t solve much as they finished in a 1-1 tie.
Caitlin Limmayog-Danielson opened the scoring for the Royals in the 20th minute. However the Kermodes tied it as former PACWEST Rookie of the Year Kelsey Green got her first of the season in the 40th minute.
After that, the goalies and defence took over. Alexa Gazzola made eight saves for the Royals and Rikki Logan stopped nine for the Kermodes.
Douglas Royals 3 - BOX SCORE
VIU Mariners 0
The Royals got a small measure of revenge on Sunday shutting out the Mariners 3-0 at VIU. Last season it was the Mariners beating the Royals in the PACWEST gold medal game.
Fifth year senior Michelle Wessa got the Royals on the board in the 19th minute; a goal that would stand as the game winner.
The Royals tallied a pair of insurance goals when Sam Kell scored in the 37th and 59th minutes to put the game on ice.
Goalie Alexa Gazzola earned her first shutout with five saves. Alex DeMille was hit with the loss allowing all three goals on eight shots.

Capilano Blues 1
For the third time this PACWEST weekend a women’s soccer game ends in a 1-1 tie.
The Falcons playing in their second road game in as many days opened the scoring. Nicole Bell got her first of the season in the 44th minute, just shy of the break.
In the early stages of the second half the Blues responded when Adrianna Babinski tied it in the 48th minute.
From there the goalie and defence took centre stage. Falcons’ goalie Simran Basra played the full 90 minutes and made four saves. The Blues on the other hand used two goalies in Brittney Roussy who made seven saves and Nikki Gerbrandt added one more.
