The CBC Bearcats have made a few changes coming into the 2019-2020 season and are ready to contend in the ultra-competitive PACWEST standings.
Coming into this season they have a handful of athletes returning after winning a playoff berth last year despite a 2-22 record. They finished with just four points, an incredible 32 points behind the Capilano Blues who they faced in a PACWEST quarterfinal.
Head coach Jason Warkentin will rely upon returns Jakob Boschmann and Stefan Halas to lead by example on the floor. They will play a key role in transitioning their new athletes into the Bearcats system. Halas has been named the team’s captain.
The most significant change for the Bearcats is clearly on their roster. They will field eight new athletes in the lineup and also have a new assistant coach in Jeff Driediger who played four years at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
Speaking of roster moves the two biggest losses for the Bearcats is their captain and setter Graham Walkey and his 541 assists from last year along with a great two-way athlete in Jacob Molitwenik who collected 187 kills, 39 aces and 138 digs. They will not only miss their contributions on the stats sheet, but their leadership, character and drive for excellence as well.
The Bearcats will need offensive numbers and production from their new athletes immediately. They were in need of a number of quality athletes to fill vacant positions this offseason specifically at the setter and outside positions. With strong recruiting the Bearcats have accomplished their offseason goals which have led to some great competition during camp and preseason.
This coming weekend the new look Bearcats open the season with a home and home match against their crosstown rivals the UFV Cascades on Friday and Saturday.
