Just six points separates the UFV Cascades (8-6) and the Camosun Chargers (5-7) in the standings and this weekend will be crucial for both schools in the PACWEST Match of the Week.

It’s the second and final meeting of the season for these two teams. At the end of October they traded thrilling five set victories at UFV and showed they are a pair of very balanced teams.

In that match the Cascades were led by their dynamic duo of Nick Bruce and Ben Friesen who combined for an incredible 77 kills. Overall this season Bruce is averaging 3.3 kills a set while Friesen is averaging 2.7 kills.

They have won six of their last seven and are smack in the middle of an extended road trip that will last eight straight matches away from home.
“We are looking forward to carrying our strong play onto the Island,” says Cascades head coach Kyle Donen. “I felt our weekend against Camosun earlier in the year was a great battle and I would expect it to be similar this time around. We've had some epic battles against Camosun and I hope we can bring a high level of compete and energy on the road.”

On the other side of the court, teams cannot afford to take the three-time defending PACWEST champion Chargers lightly despite their losing record. They were required to forfeit their first four matches due to an ineligible player.

They are very hot winning three straight and going into a fourth set just once. Their balanced offence is heating up as well averaging 9.5 kills each set with a .232 hitting percentage. Jerome Cross has stepped into a power role this season leading the Chargers with 3.7 kills a set, totalling 163 kills. As a matter of fact he is among the leaders in total offensive points.

On the defensive side they have been strong as well. Spencer Janzen has a PACWEST high 34 blocks.

During their five set thrillers against the Cascades in October, Cross was outstanding collecting 33 kills and 27 digs. Rian Plante gave the Chargers a second option as he tallied 19 kills in that match.

Friday night the Chargers invade the Cascades with an 8:00pm start time, then their final meeting on Saturday is at 3:00pm.
