The PACWEST champion Douglas Royals will open the CCAA soccer championship on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30pm PST when they face the host Durham Lords in the final quarterfinal of the day. The Royals upset the top ranked VIU Mariners 1-0 in the PACWEST gold medal game, while the Lords fell in the Ontario quarterfinal to the Sheridan Bruins.
The Royals won six games this season and got hot at the right time and are hoping to continue that momentum into the CCAA nationals. They had a fairly balanced offence this past regular season led by Milan Gandesha and his five goals. Yianni Siafakas chipped in with four goals.
On the other side the Lords had seven wins this past season and finished in a three-way tie for first in the OCAA’s East Conference. They were balanced offensively with nine players getting at least one goal and recording 31 on the season while giving up only seven. Their primary offensive weapon was Joshua Lee who tallied eight goals followed by the five scored by LeRohne Young.
The Royals haven’t won a CCAA national title since 2005, however won silver in 2017. The Lords on the other hand haven’t won a national medal since 1999 which was a bronze, the same medal they won in 1987.
