A Heat Sweep

The PACWEST golf season opened this past weekend at the Quilchina Golf & Country Club under cloudy and wet conditions.

Day 1 started with a bang as the defending CCAA gold medalist Daniel Campbell holed a bunker shot from 68 yards out for an eagle. He would finish with a 71, two shots back of the leaders.

VIU’s Wyatt Brook and Douglas’ Dustin Franko shared the leaderboard on Saturday as both shot a 69. For Franko it was his first PACWEST round. Jacob Vanderpas of the host Langara Falcons found himself one shot back, finishing with a 70.

On Sunday however Franko and Brook struggled to keep pace with the leaders shooting a 77 and 72 respectively and fell behind.

Day 2 belonged to Marcus Apchin of the UBC Okanagan Heat, the only golfer to shoot under 70, finishing with a 69 and a tournament total of 140 to claim the top spot. Campbell also made a strong push Sunday and finished with a 70 and tournament total of 141. Brook finished third with a score of 141.

The UFV Cascades finished on top of the team results combining for a score of 583, nine strokes better than the Heat. The Camosun Chargers took the third spot with a score of 604.

On the women’s side Samantha Copeland of the Heat led from start to finish shooting 83 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday to win her first PACWEST tournament.

A pair of VIU Mariners finished second and third as Alex Foston carded a 169, two strokes behind Copeland. Victoria Ross ended the tournament with a 171.
As a team the Heat finished with a 339, one stroke better than the Mariners at 340.

Next weekend the Heat will host the second PACWEST tournament at the Okanagan Golf Club.
